Oaxacan painted figures of wood have an earned reputation for their individual uniqueness. A few families in the state of Oaxaca have kept a tradition alive and with each generation added to this creative legacy. Their reputation has brought a host of imitators throughout Mexico.

In the past ten years we've been able to fit Oaxacan Woodcarving into "3" distinct grades:
to the Gallery

"A" Grade ('a work of Art')- Top notch carvings are usually special commissioned pieces for a gallery. These are the ones the master artist proudly displays in his home. The kind the artist holds up and says "this is my work". At the top level you will see more attention to detail and what looks technically impossible possible. These carvings actually seem alive or have a soul to them. The stars in a vast collection.

"B" Grade('a work of Craft')- In this category you will find young and inspiring apprentices to the art. You will also find the carvers that sacrifice quality for quantity. The time and effort in these pieces can be just as high as the "A" but there can be an element missing. Ironically some of the real gems come from this catagory from the artist's experimentation in form and subject matter.

"C" Grade('a work of Crap')- Often made elsewhere in Mexico these are crude quality pieces found in tourist traps and in fierce numbers on eBay. They make up 90% of what is out there! Considered throughout Mexico as the 'Oaxacan Style' they are at best primatively shaped, poorly sanded and hastily painted with airbrushes or sponges.
