Port Wahakaa is an independent importer and wholesaler of Oaxacan Woodcarvings in the U.S. Our passion started as admiring collectors who chanced upon cruder unsigned carvings from the late seventies and early eighties. By the mid nineties we had relationships with some of the more prominent but now far too pricey artists that laid the foundation for this art to thrive worldwide. From their earlier tree-like appeal to their ultra-statuesque present form, we follow their evolvement like the copal tree they sprung from. Early on we functioned as buyers and wholesalers to large galleries and stores. Following that we became traveling vendors seen at various craft shows and art festivals in Virginia. A couple of years were spent at D.C.'s Eastern market with a booth dedicated to animalito carvings. Following that stint we set up a permanent gallery in the artistically eclectic Rehoboth Beach Delaware. The culmination of our travels and experiences all now reside in our present location in Tampa Florida where we can now strictly focus on getting the best pieces for collectors shipping around the world. Although we are not affiliated nor a member of a fair trade organization we have always operated in that same manner. We buy from individual artists at their prices and most of the time that dictates the range of prices. As you research Oaxacan carving around the web you will find we are not the cheapest and by far not the most expensive. But we are the best in overall quality and knowledge about the artists we sell. We have been referenced in several magazines pertaining to carving, dog art, and oddly enough cuisine. Our web site strives to be a source for everyone. From the first time enthusiasts to longtime collectors we have something for all. Every carving we ship goes out Priority Mail Insured. Orders are almost always processed the next day on weekdays and confirmation is given twice. We are very supportive of teachers who would like to teach Oaxacan Woodcarving in classrooms and offer a 10% discount on any piece in our gallery. Please contact prior to ordering. We maintain a continually updated online retail gallery. 2006 is the Year of the Dog! Personal Dog Sculpture.
